Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis

چکیده
Taken together, these studies indicate that a mature form of VirG, probably lacking a carboxyterminal portion, can interact with F-actin. Recently, we have used antibody that recognizes the aminoterminal but not the carboxyterminal portion of VirG to detect secreted VirG and F-actin-associated VirG in intracellular bacteria, and the results from these studies further support this view. If the cleavage of surface-exposed VirG that is seen in bacteria grown in vitro is also necessary for intracellular bacteria to spread, then the isolation of a mutant defective in in vitro cleavage of surfaceexposed VirG and showing some change in spreading ability would confirm the scenario depicted by Goldberg.

A Periplasmic Polymer Curves Vibrio cholerae and Promotes Pathogenesis
Pathogenic Vibrio cholerae remains a major human health concern. V. cholerae has a characteristic curved rod morphology, with a longer outer face and a shorter inner face. The mechanism and function of this curvature were previously unknown. Here, we identify and characterize CrvA, the first curvature determinant in V. cholerae. CrvA self-assembles into filaments at the inner face of cell curva...
متن کاملThe vibrio pathogenicity island-encoded mop protein modulates the pathogenesis and reactogenicity of epidemic vibrio cholerae.
Epidemic Vibrio cholerae possess the VPI (Vibrio pathogenicity island) essential virulence gene cluster. The VPI is 41.2 kb in size and encodes 29 potential proteins, several of which have no known function. We show that the VPI-encoded Orf4 is a predicted 34-kDa periplasmic protein containing a zinc metalloprotease motif. V. cholerae seventh-pandemic (El Tor) strain N16961 carrying an orf4 mut...
متن کاملGenome sequence of the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae Amazonia.
Vibrio cholerae O1 Amazonia is a pathogen that was isolated from cholera-like diarrhea cases in at least two countries, Brazil and Ghana. Based on multilocus sequence analysis, this lineage belongs to a distinct profile compared to strains from El Tor and classical biotypes. The genomic analysis revealed that it contains Vibrio pathogenicity island 2 and a set of genes related to pathogenesis a...
متن کاملEnvironmental vibrios represent a source of antagonistic compounds that inhibit pathogenic Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains
With the overuse of antibiotics, many pathogens including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus have evolved multidrug resistance making treatment more difficult. While understanding the mechanisms that underlie pathogenesis is crucial, knowledge of bacterial interactions of V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus could provide insight to their susceptibility outside of the human host. Based ...
متن کاملGene encoding zonula occludens toxin (zot) does not occur independently from cholera enterotoxin genes (ctx) in Vibrio cholerae.
Of 167 Vibrio cholerae isolates screened for sequences homologous with zonula occludens toxin (zot) or cholera toxin (ctx) genes, 3.0% of non-O1, 100.0% of clinical O1, and 0.0% of environmental O1 strains contained both zot and ctx. zot was present only in strains that were ctx positive; all ctx-positive strains carried zot. The absence of zot-positive, ctx-negative strains suggests ZOT is not...
متن کاملVibrio cholerae Biofilms and Cholera Pathogenesis
Vibrio cholerae can switch between motile and biofilm lifestyles. The last decades have been marked by a remarkable increase in our knowledge of the structure, regulation, and function of biofilms formed under laboratory conditions. Evidence has grown suggesting that V. cholerae can form biofilm-like aggregates during infection that could play a critical role in pathogenesis and disease transmi...
